Help Following Rape

If you have been raped, please contact your pastor or local pregnancy care center who can refer you to the appropriate help available in your community.

You may choose to report the rape to the local sheriff or police department. If you are going to report the rape to authorities, it is advisable to do so as soon as possible. It is very normal not to remember all the details of the traumatic event until after you have slept, so you may remember more details to report after sleeping. It is also normal to have nightmares or not want to go to sleep following trauma, but sleep is how the brain processes trauma. It is even possible to forget major portions of the traumatic event and then remember them later.

If you set an appointment with your doctor or go to the hospital, they will most likely do a SANE (or SAFE) exam (not to be confused with mental health) which is a physical exam and interview to gather any evidence and assess any damage. Typical protocol may include giving you pills to "prevent pregnancy". Make sure you understand the risks and processes of any medications. You may consent or refuse any treatment, medication, or procedure. While medical personnel may recommend or prescribe treatment, you should never feel coerced or pressured.
