Look to the Cross

Defending life is not easy. We have to stand before councils, stay up late writing and
planning, spend our free time organizing and contacting others, leave our families to go
to the public square to beg for signatures, endure ridicule from those who disagree, make ourselves vulnerable to others, carry petitions everywhere walking around at every
event we attend seeking signatures, while we would rather be sitting and enjoying
events with everyone else.
The price of life is not easy, but when we look to Jesus we see how very little is asked of
us. We stand before councils; he stood before angry mobs. We stay up late typing; he
stayed up late in agony praying fervently and sweating. We endure mild taunts while he endured betrayal, beating, excessive scourging, spitting, and a crown of thorns. We
carry petitions while he carried the weight of all our sins in His cross. Our hands and
feet get tired running around getting signatures; His hands and feet were nailed to the
cross. We make ourselves vulnerable by reaching out to others with the truth they often
do not want to hear or are too busy to bother; He made Himself vulnerable to everyone
by emptying Himself completely for us by dying on the cross.
Our cross is heavy for us, I agree, but we can find our strength in Jesus who goes before us, beside us, and behind us. Our fatigue, suffering, and shame is but a fragment of His,
and He will carry even that for us if we put our trust in Him and let Him. So, when I am
nervous, embarrassed, tired, or afraid, I do look to the Cross. Jesus understands. He
shows us the way through it. I am a follower of Christ. I know that by following Him to
the Cross I too will follow Him to the Resurrection.
A Blessed Holy Week to all!!
